MAITT (Matthew Arnold Initial Teacher Training) is the main School Direct ITT provider for Liverpool and Sefton.

Matthew Arnold School is the Lead School in the MAITT consortium. They are based in the Dingle area of Liverpool. Our consortium is currently made up of schools in Liverpool and Sefton and we’re working together to train primary teachers of the future through the School Direct route. We work very closely with Liverpool John Moores University who has designed a Post Graduate Diploma in Education for the School Direct (tuition) Trainees.

MAITT offers two routes into teaching. One is called the School Direct Training Programme (tuition) and the other is called the School Direct Training Programme (salaried).

The MAITT consortium work in close partnership with Everton Nursery School and Family Centre, St John Bosco Catholic High School, Palmerston Special School and the i2i Teaching School Alliance to ensure recruitment covers all phases in Liverpool.

Entry Requirements

Minimum degree required: Upper Second

Applications are invited from graduates with a good honours degree (a minimum of 2:1 classification), or from students in the final year of their degree anticipating at least a 2.1 classification. However, we will consider applicants with a 2.2 classification on an individual profile basis, provided they can demonstrate excellent potential to become a successful teacher.

A Higher National Diploma (HND) or Higher National Certificate (HNC) are not acceptable as equivalent to a degree for the purpose of entry to this course.

At the time of application, candidates should have GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent) in English Language, Mathematics and a Science (preferably Combined).

A range of other GCSE or equivalent qualifications to reflect the breadth of the curriculum is desirable.

Working with children – disclosure
i2i Teaching School Alliance in conjunction with Matthew Arnold Primary School are required to ensure that students, who engage in Regulated Activity, are suitable for an Initial Teacher Education Programme through a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) disclosure. You will be required to apply for an Enhanced Disclosure of criminal records through the DBS.
Once you have been accepted onto a place at the University, we will write to you with further instructions on how to apply for a DBS Disclosure through the University as a DBS Registered Body and subscribe to the DBS Update Service.

School Experience
It is essential that applicants have suitable experience of working in a Primary School setting, either on a voluntary or salaried basis. It is desirable that such experience includes a range of year groups covering KS1 and KS2. The more experience an applicant can gain before applying for a place on the course, the greater the chance they will have of being successful.

If the number of applications far exceeds the number of places available on the course, applicants with little or no school experience will not be selected for interview.

Professional Skills Tests
All applicants to ITE are required to pass the skills tests before starting their course.

The training course is intense and a high level of motivation to learn is essential. You will be fully supported in your training but you need to be able to take responsibility for your continued professional development.

We are looking for enthusiastic and committed professionals who are able to inspire children to become better learners. We need candidates who we can develop into creative teachers for the 21st Century. Applicants should indicate any additional experiences, hobbies or interests appropriate to the role of the teacher.

Computing skills
Applicants must be competent in their use of Information and Communication Technology.

How We Select Our Trainees

Admissions process
UCAS ITT forms are carefully screened to select applicants for interview. Strategic Partners and the Lead School of the i2i Teaching School Alliance will consider how much recent experience applicants have had in Primary schools, academic qualifications including predictions, personal qualities and suitability for teaching, and additional interests and experiences.
Selected applicants will be invited to attend an interview. Offers of places cannot be made until an interview has taken place. If an applicant cannot attend the specified interview date, an alternative date may be given, subject to places remaining.

Interview process
The interview process consists of formal questions, where you will asked to share your experiences of working with children and demonstrate your understanding of Primary Education and the role of a teacher.
You will also be expected to show your ability to work effectively with children. This will involve a task where you will be observed working with children, for example, sharing a book of your choice with a particular year group or working on a task with representatives of the school council.
The process will also consist of an English and Maths task. All details of the process will be fully explained before you attend your interview.

About This Training Programme

The Qualification
This training programme has been developed by i2i Teaching School Alliance in conjunction with the Matthew Arnold Primary School.

It is a one-year, full-time programme, which leads to the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE Primary) of the John Moores University.
Recommendation for the award of QTS is also dependent on passing the QTS skills tests in English, mathematics and ICT.

The programme lasts a year, with 120 school based learning days – 90 in your main placement, with a further 30 in an alternative placement.
There will be a further training days held at Matthew Arnold Primary School as well as days held at venues organised by i2i Teaching School Alliance. Achievement of a PGCE Primary Award enables the University to recommend Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which is awarded by the General Teaching Council.

The Programme
This programme aims to develop outstanding, reflective primary practitioners who are confident and competent professionals with an enthusiasm for teaching and lifelong learning. The programme aims to prepare you for the next stage of your developmentas a fully qualified teacher.

The programme prepares you to teach the full range of National Curriculum subjects, with all training based on latest curriculum developments. You will also develop your ICT skills for personal and professional needs.
